Twenty Seven

It had been a glorious dream. Natalia was in his arms, naked and moaning for his touch. He was giving her pleasure, pleasure he had never been able to give any woman. Not with his monstrous countenance.

But here she was, her breathless cries sounding in his ears as he caressed her. He stroked her breasts and she pushed herself more firmly against his hands. When she started to climax, he felt every ripple, every contraction of her body. And when she pressed against his hardness, he thought he might explode right there.

Abruptly, he started to wake. The brutal interruption to his dream left him confused and disorientated.

His transformations were rare and he never got used to them. The shifting of bone and sinew. The growth of muscle, of hair and horns. The fundamental change from man to beast.

His memory flooded back. He remembered now. She had drugged him. The last of the dream slipped away as rage took its place.

Nat grabbed Kam’s shirt off the floor and pulled it on to cover her nakedness. She watched the change warily. He fell to all fours, his body widening and filling out.

Skin darkened to shades of grey. Hair sprouted and canines lengthened. His groan of pain deepened into a sustained growl. When he looked up, his hazel eyes had morphed into piercing green ones.

“Hey,” she said, keeping her distance. “Welcome back. Sorry about the somnalium.”

She was hoping Beast would forgive her for knocking him out. Again. No such luck. He glared at her, face dark with fury.

“You are unwise to remain so close to me,” he snarled. “You’ve incapacitated me for the last time. I’m going to rip your head off.”

He leapt for her and she only just managed to get out of his path.

“Beast, look around you. We’re trapped.”

He paid no heed, swiping at her with vicious claws. He wasn’t playing. He was really, really unhappy with her.

She sprang onto the table to avoid another blow, then somersaulted off, grabbing the chair on her way. She threw it at him with all her strength. It slammed into his head, driving him backwards a few precious steps.

“Beast, listen to me. We found the guy who knows where Mortaine is. Do you hear me? We’re a step closer to him.”

The urgency of her words finally got through. He slowed down, looking at her suspiciously.

“You found the bestial?”

“Yes. I’m sorry I knocked you out, but I couldn’t have done it without Kam. You should be grateful to him.”

“Kamran.” His brows drew down. “I smell him.”

“Well, obviously.” Nat hid her sudden nervousness. “He was just here a minute ago.”

“No. I smell him on you. All over you.”

Nat backed away.

“I don’t know what you mean.”

Beast stared at her and his eyes flashed green fire.

“And I smell you. On me. On my hands.”

Fuck.

“Look, let’s just concentrate on the here and now. The little bastard we were tracking locked us down here. If you could just…”

Beast roared. The full-throated bellow of rage reverberated round the little room as the realisation hit him.
